As part of PIChE CAMANAVA’s 3rd (Online) General Assembly last July 25, 2021 via Zoom, one of the organization’s active members got to share his passion on Hazardous Waste Management and going even further by making it very relatable as he emphasized on wastes generated at everyone’s own homes.
Engr. Nicole Angelo Baes, a Technical Sales Engineer at NCC-BDH Chemical Trading, opened his short talk with the importance of Proper Hazardous Waste Management, accentuating its effect on soil contamination, water pollution, air pollution and various health issues. Thus, he gave various tips that the participants can practice in their daily lives:
- Reduce waste – change of lifestyle, less toxic choices
- Segregate your waste – hazardous and non-hazardous
- Use appropriate containers for each waste type
- Ensure proper labelling of your wastes
- Submit your hazardous wastes to the nearest MRF (Materials Recovery Facility)
He was also able to slightly touch on the different classification of hazardous wastes – their descriptions and how they are labelled, including but not limited to: Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), Electronic wastes, greases, inks, explosive chemicals, and others. In addition, he explained what would be the ‘good practices’ to become a hazardous wastes’ transporter or facility especially because of the “loads” sensitivity and/or importance.
It has been a brief session but the participants were able to have another view regarding hazardous wastes and how they can take part on ensuring that their own wastes are not badly handled and hopefully this new knowledge can become a vehicle to bigger applications in the future.
