MARINE LITTER 101 &
THE NEW NATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION ON MARINE LITTER
PIChE CAMANAVA WEBINAR SERIES 2021-01
August 28, 2021 – 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Speaker: Engr. VOLTAIRE L. ACOSTA
Project Manager: Healthy Oceans and Clean Cities Initiative United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat)
Although the Philippines has yet to carry out its definitive baseline study, various international studies have ranked the country either as Top 7 (Lavender-Law et al., 2020), Top 3 (Jambeck et al., 2015) and biggest (Meijer et al., 2021) contributor of plastics into the worlds oceans. This amount of ‘mismanaged’ waste has created a mass of plastics and other waste clogging our waterways and eventually ending up in the ocean and in our beaches. Based on the UN Report, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish or other marine life in the ocean.
Acknowledging this threat, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), supported by UNDP and GIZ, carried out a multi-stakeholder approach to develop the National Plan of Action on Marine Litter (NPOA-ML) to lay out actions to combat marine litter, including plastics. Recently adopted last August 5 as DENR Memorandum Circular No. 2021-10, the NPOA-ML will also provide additional lens to marine litter issues and the control of additional leakage of waste into bodies of water.
The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers in cooperation with PIChE CAMANAVA, is hosting the Marine Litter 101 and the National Plan of Action of on Marine Litter webinar in support of the Philippine government’s initiative to manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution and to create awareness on the new NPOA-ML. The objectives of this webinar are the following:
- To define, characterize and identify the different sources of marine litter
- To discuss where marine debris typically comes from and how it commonly finds its way into the marine environment;
- To explain the effects of marine litter on animals, people, vessels and habitats;
- To discuss the plastics value chain challenges;
