In a bold step toward future-proofing the careers of Filipino engineers, the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers – CAMANAVA Chapter hosted a member-exclusive webinar on May 24, 2025, titled “Engineers in Tech: Unlocking Data Science and AI Opportunities.” Held via Zoom from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the event drew enthusiastic participation from engineers across disciplines who were eager to understand how they can transition into or grow within the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.

The webinar featured three distinguished speakers who are living proof that engineers can successfully pivot into high-impact roles in tech. Each speaker delivered a 30–45-minute talk, followed by an engaging panel Q&A session that tackled everything from upskilling and job prospects to ethical concerns in algorithm design.

Throughout the session, the speakers demystified common misconceptions such as the overemphasis on coding, the belief that AI is only for computer scientists, and the fear that AI will replace traditional engineering roles. Instead, they showcased how engineers’ analytical mindset, design approach, and domain expertise make them uniquely valuable in data-driven teams.

The open forum featured bold questions on compensation, industry saturation, educational gaps, and the moral responsibilities of engineers developing AI systems. Attendees praised the candor and depth of the discussion, calling it “transformative” and “unexpectedly personal.”

The event reinforced PIChE CAMANAVA’s commitment to lifelong learning, digital transformation, and empowering its members to lead in emerging fields. As one participant noted, “It wasn’t just a webinar; it was a wake-up call.”

A recording of the session and supplemental resources will be made available to members in the coming weeks. Feedback collected through post-event surveys will also guide future programs aimed at strengthening the professional competitiveness of Filipino engineers in the global digital economy.

Stay tuned for upcoming events, workshops, and learning tracks as PIChE CAMANAVA continues to bridge the gap between traditional engineering and the evolving world of intelligent systems.
