Academic Support for Chemical Engineering Student: Contract Signing with PLM ChE Student
by Engr. Maria Lovezza S. Balanay, SSChE
The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) CAMANAVA Chapter continues its steadfast commitment to nurturing the next generation of chemical engineers through its “Academic Support for ChE Students” program. This initiative, designed to provide financial assistance to deserving 4th-year Chemical Engineering students, recently celebrated a milestone with the signing of a contract with its chosen scholar, Crizha Ann Bugay, from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).
The contract signing ceremony took place on April 3, 2025, at the PLM campus. Representing the PIChE CAMANAVA Chapter was its President, Engr. Ma. Rosario G. Garcia. The event was witnessed by Engr. Jarlie R. Clemeña, Chairperson of the PLM Chemical Engineering Department, and Engr. Lovezza Balanay, the Chapter’s Director of the Community Development Committee. Chapter Advisers and fellow members, Engrs. Teresita Balba and Elen Perlado were also present to show their support. During the ceremony, the first disbursement of the grant, amounting to Php 5,000, was handed over to Ms. Bugay.
The success of the program was made possible through the valuable contributions of the project team members and selection committee, Engrs. Jan Guiller Vergara, Stefan Mamaril, Ron Andrei Soriano, and Gian Mark Pulgar, and guidance of the Chapter’s Past President, Engr. Elisa Arriola. Their collective efforts helped shape this initiative and ensured its successful implementation.
Launched in October 2024, the Academic Support for ChE Students program was initiated to support 4th-year Chemical Engineering students who demonstrate an outstanding academic track record and uphold good moral character. The program provides a total grant of Php 20,000 per scholar, which can be used for allowance, learning materials, research expenses, or project design costs.
The grant was made possible through the generosity of sponsors during the Chapter’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, held on February 3, 2024, at PTTC, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. This milestone event not only celebrated the Chapter’s decade of achievements but also paved the way for meaningful programs such as this scholarship initiative.
The program is rolled out in collaboration with the Chapter’s partner institutions—PLM and Adamson University. While only PLM produced qualified applicants, the program proudly awarded its first scholarship to Ms. Bugay for the second semester of Academic Year 2024-2025.
This initiative showcases PIChE CAMANAVA Chapter’s dedication to fostering excellence and supporting the aspirations of future chemical engineers, reinforcing its role as a valuable partner in the academe.
